To show that we are not all doom and gloom here at RITB, we would like to take this opportunity to start to congratulate all of the over-achievers this season throughout the football leagues, and more.
To start; what Brighton have achieved this season is phenomenal. Promoted to the top division for the first time since 1983, and look set to even win the Championship title ahead of the team, Newcastle, that everyone expected to take to the league like a duck to water. All the best for the Premier League lads, and, coming from a Blackpool fan, just enjoy it.
Going down one league to League One, we have Sheffield Utd. A team that was in the Premier League only 10 years ago has now had to endure the 3rd Division for most of the last decade. They have suffered play-off defeat in 3 of those years. But they are now League One champions, and with only one game to go, they could finish with 100 points in the bag. Some achievement. They will surely be keeping a close eye on their neighbour’s end-of-season performances, hoping that Wednesday stay in the league for a couple of Steel City Derbies. As a neutral, those are a couple of Championship games I’d love to see.
We already have three confirmed promotions in League Two! Doncaster, Plymouth, and Portsmouth. Rovers going back up to League One the first time of asking after being relegated in the 15/16 season. And it looks like they are going to win the title in the process. What a remarkable season they’ve had. Argyle suffered back-to-back relegations from the Championship in 2010 and then from League One in 2011, and have been in the bottom tier ever since. Again, all the best for next season! And finally, one that surely brings a smile to every football fan’s face, Portsmouth are promoted. After all of their financial problems (caused by yet again bad ownership – but we wont talk about that right now), worries over their existence, and eventual three relegations, two of which were back-to-back, Pompey are finally looking stable enough to be a competitive football club once again.
And last but not least, Lincoln City are re-joining the Football League! After winning everybody’s hearts with their fantastic FA Cup run this season, it has this weekend been confirmed that they are National League Champions. They were relegated from League Two back in 2011, so it will be great to see them there again next season. I bet their fans are over the moon.
All this tremendous news in the world of football and we are not even at the end of the season yet …what a game.
